Imagine if diseases such as cancer or heart disease could be detected earlier so more lives could be saved.

Imagine if companies had a tool that could better protect them against cyber-attacks.

Or what if we had intelligent traffic systems that could reduce travel time and increase reliability when using public transport.

These are some of the possibilities that research within AI can lead to. Therefore Aalborg University has decided to establish eight new teams tasked with advancing the science of AI and delivering research that will ensure that Denmark is at the forefront when it comes to using the full potential of AI.

"At Aalborg University, we have done research in AI for many years - but with the new AI:X, we have the opportunity to create an AI lighthouse that will eventually make a big difference - for companies, society and the individual citizen," says Per Michael Johansen, Rector of Aalborg University.

Focus on interdisciplinary collaboration

The eight new research teams: ‘AI:X’ will each consist of two directors, also called “lab directors” each will be from a different department. One will work on the development of AI and the other will work on the use of AI. Each ‘AI:X’ will also be assigned four PhD students and a mentor. This means that Aalborg University will facilitate a collaboration between two departments that would not normally work together on AI - such as Law and Mathematics.

"It's a win-win-win," says Thomas Bak, Dean of the Technical Faculty of IT and Design and initiator of the new research teams.

“By facilitating these interdisciplinary collaborations, we create completely new opportunities for science, we boost the career of many researchers, and we also show that AI is one of our main focus areas  here at Aalborg University,” he says.

This is the first time a university in Denmark has embarked on this kind of interdisciplinary research in AI, which will contribute with practical AI-based solutions in everything from healthcare to sustainability.

Great opportunities for young researchers

The investment in AI:X will amount to DKK 55 million and will not only benefit society and citizens but will also create new opportunities for young researchers in particular.

Aalborg University plans for the new AI:X to promote the careers of younger researchers, which is why the eight teams will be led by researchers at the level of assistant professor or early associate professor.

"We want to focus on the emerging talent of younger researchers," Dean Thomas Bak  says and continues:

"If you are a young researcher and want to do something with your career, this is the place to be", he says.

The first four AI:X will open in 2025, and the next four will open in 2026.

AI:X

The eight AI:X labs will each consist of two lab directors, four PhD students and a mentor. The labs will be virtual labs, and Aalborg University will facilitate the collaboration.

In spring 2025, Aalborg University will initiate a kind of ‘dating’ - where researchers can meet colleagues from other departments and find out which fields they would like to cultivate.

The deans of the individual faculties will ultimately decide who the lab directors will be.

The PhD positions for the first AI:X will be advertised in spring 2025.
